CHAPTER EIGHT
The High Calling of Service
“There are only two types of people.”
These are the words of Albert Schweitzer. The story behind these words, however, is quite interesting. Marion Mill was born in a royal palace in Hungary with all the privileges that entails. Her first spoon was made of solid gold. As a child and youth, she was sent only to the best schools. In young adulthood in Vienna, she met and married a medical doctor named Otto Preminger. Marion went on to become an actress. Her husband’s medical career was abandoned and he became a famous movie director.
Marion lived life large and mostly in the public eye. Her beauty, wit, and charm made her a world-renowned hostess. She carried on a number of high-profile affairs. Her autobiography was aptly titled, All I Want Is Everything. And it seemed that everything was indeed hers or at least at the edge of her fingertips.
The enemy is the great thief, however, and soon alcohol and drugs had emptied her hands of everything and brought her to her knees. She attempted suicide on three different occasions. Otto divorced her, whereupon she returned to Vienna. While in exile in her homeland, she met Dr. Albert Schweitzer. He was home on leave from his hospital work in Africa.
Schweitzer told Marion of his hospital work. He spoke of its challenges and how he was trying to shine a light in this difficult environment. When it came time for him to return to the place of his calling, she surprised everyone—and perhaps herself—by asking if she could join him in his work. To everyone’s surprise—and perhaps his own—he granted her request.
Marion Mills, the princess born in a palace, went to work in a little village in Africa. She spent the rest of her life in such noble work as emptying bedpans, tearing sheets to make bandages, and cleaning up around the clinic.
After her death, Time magazine cited a quote from Marion. “Albert Schweitzer says there are two kinds of people. There are the helpers, and the non-helpers. I thank God that He allowed me to become a helper, and in helping, I found everything.”
If all you want is everything, you will find it at the Serve Table.
